Details
Mencia is such an under-rated variety that has its origins in the north-west of Spain. It presents kind of like a cross between Barbera and Cabernet Franc - medium bodied, with dark fruit, but juicy acidity and a really savoury, meaty edge. This is filled with violets and plum and iron - a complex little number that is really easy to drink.

The beginnings of Quinta Do Buble go back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the current owners ancestors began to produce wine, not only for their own consumption, but also for commercial purposes. Then, as is now, the wines were made using indigenous grape varieties such as Mencía, Bastardo and Godello. From 2002 the Quinta do Buble winery was built, and the current generation of the family marked this as a momentous occasion, adding to the small vineyard holdings and taking their destiny in their own hands - prior to this, winemaking was done at other wineries, belonging to friends and neighbours. There are approximately 22 hectares of vineyards, mostly planted on hillsides to maximise exposure and drainage, and this leads to wines of juicier acidity and intense aromas. Today, the wines are well regarded, and go from strength to strength! Mencia is such an under-rated variety that has its origins in the north-west of Spain. Wine region
Monterrei, Spain
Monterrei is located in the north-west of Spain right above Portugal, in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean which influences the styles of wine that come out of this region. Monterrei most commonly grows Albariño as well as Doña Blanca, Godello, Treixadura, Mencía and Merenzao. The soils are mostly granite-based, giving the wines a unique and fascinating character. You'll find small, family-run wineries that produce limited quantities of wine, which are highly sought after by wine enthusiasts.
