Details
This is a premium single vineyard Chardonnay from Adelaide Hills outfit Sidewood. It's a complex number, showing plenty of winemaking and oak spice - there's some flint rock, smoke and popcorn, all alongside fresh white peach and zesty lemon. The palate is round but fresh, with some creaminess from the barrel, but ends with a kick of acidity.

Sidewood was established in 2004 by Owen & Cassandra Inglis in the Adelaide Hills region of Oakbank. This elevated area has a relatively cool climate and is well known for producing elegant, fresh wines that are built on a backbone of acidity. With a raft of experience in the corporate world, Owen is ambitious and from starting with their 120-hectare Mappinga estate that is planted with Sauvignon and Chardonnay vines, they have expanded to vineyards at Nairne, Echunga and Verdun. Each vineyard site is different, and offers advantages for different varieties - for example Mappinga is the coolest and Nairne is the warmest, whilst the vineyard at Echunga is only planted to Shiraz. Sidewood is headed by renowned winemaker Darryl Catlin, who worked for a number of years at Shaw & Smith, and now also has his own eponymous label, sourcing fruit from the Hills and the Clare Valley. His knowledge and skill craft the Sidewood wines into fragrant, fresh examples that are elegant and gastronomically flexible. Pairing guide
This gorgeously racy and modern Chardonnay really delivers when it comes to flavour, aroma, and overall character, and it deserves being paired with dishes that really allow the wine to shine. We reckon it’s best suited to creamier pasta sauces, chicken or turkey cooked in herby butter, and richer fish steaks or fillets - such as halibut, hake, or barramundi. It’s also going to be a winner with polenta dishes, pretty much any seafood creation imaginable, and with grilled or roasted salmon. Beautiful!

Wine region
Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
