Details
The Maschitano Rosso is a real show stopper! An intense nose of roasted plum, thyme, cherry liqueur and violet leads to pure finesse and elegance on the palate. Confident and rustic tannins add bite, whilst fresh, reviving acidity balance this wine. This wine is deep and complex, unveiling new layers of flavour over time in the glass and has a long finish, built around flavours of leathery spiced cherry and savoury oregano.
Elisabetta & Luigi Musto Carmelitano are brother and sister and the current guardians of this small but passionate estate in the south of Italy. They have full dedication to mastering one single varietal - Aglianico. Their wines are an honest, pure expression of what top-notch Aglianico can be - beautiful, elegant and balanced, yet powerful and rustic. They use organic methods to complement Basilicata’s unique volcanic soils. For a grape that can have such power and structure, their wines have tremendous grace and finesse as well as a refreshing underlying minerality from the volcanic soils. The family farms three separate organic vineyards, each located on the southern slopes of Monte Vulture and home to old vines with these sky-reaching elevations of 2,000 feet above sea level. With the mission to make an unadulterated expression of Aglianico, the family’s wines unveil the true soul of one of Italy’s most noble and loved grapes.

Pairing guide
Aglianico is a delicious wine, packed full of rustic, robust flavours that can stand up to some serious competition on the palate. All that sunshine leads to bursting earthy notes, hits of savoury leather and spice, and the sort of black fruit flavours that call out for hearty, homely meaty dishes shared with friends and family. The obvious pairing for Aglianico wines such as this one would be game dishes - venison, kangaroo, boar, etc - but also beef brisket and other cheap-but-fashionable cuts would fit well. It goes beautifully with Mexican food, too - beef mince and black eyed beans are a great combo here, as well as mushroom-rich dinners, lentils and other pulses for the vegetarians out there.

Wine region

Basilicata, Italy
Basilicata is a burgeoning wine region located in the southern part of Italy; if you can picture the boot shape of Italy, Basilicata is located where the arch would be! The region has a long wine-making history. In the northwest is Aglianico del Vulture DOC, vineyards perched upon a dormant named Monte Vulture (one of the tallest in Europe at 1000m). This classification has a reputation for serious reds made of Aglianico (often blended with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon). The cream of the crop is Aglianico del Vulture DOCG Superiore - bold, intense, with a deep and satisfying flavour profile; a wine to lay down for sure. To the east of Basilicata is Matera DOC, known for its aromatic white wines made from the Greco and Malvasia and reds from long-lived Primitivo. Basilicata is uncharted territory and one to look out for!
