Details
The fruit for this wine comes from outstanding 95-year-old dry grown bush vines in the Clarendon sub-region. The perfume of this wine is just a total knock-out - loaded with rose petal, pomegranate and lavender, it really jumps right out of the glass. There's glazed red cherries and ripe strawberry in there too, mixed with white pepper and a lightly baked earth note. It's powerful, with round tannins and a long finish - a great example of the pretty but powerful styles of Grenache being made in the McLaren Vale today.
Willunga 100 are Grenache specialists in McLaren Vale, focussing their entire attention on the beauty and potential of this noble grape. Each year they release at least 5 different Grenaches, from various vineyard sites and with different characteristics amplified. Such passion and dedication is admirable, and exciting. It allows to see the true potential of a grape, that for years has been treated as a lesser cousin of Shiraz, when in reality it is anything but. Their vineyards are based around the subregions of Clarendon and Blewitt Springs Vineyards, with various altitudes and aspects. The winemaking team, headed by local legend Mark Farmilo, are obsessed with producing wines that have a focus on aromatic brightness and purity of fruit. To this end, they use less oak than many of their neighbouring counterparts, and the wines are fresher and zestier for it!

Pairing guide
Grenache is always a top food-pairing wine, which is why it’s such a mainstay as a French restaurant wine, gracing the chequered tablecloths of bistros right across the continent. It pairs so well with hearty, rustic dishes like cassoulet and braised beef, deeply savoury stews, roast chicken and turkey, and most beef and veal dishes. However, it’s also a top match for less spicy Indian curries like butter chicken, jalfrezi, or rogan josh, and chilli-spiked pasta dishes, too.
