Details
From fruit sourced from the highly regarded Stonegarden Vineyard, this is a whole bunch ferment spicy Grenache. Slightly hazy ruby in colour as it is not fined nor filtered. Lots of pure bright red fruit with a ginseng-like spice running though it. Dusty tannins over a fleshy framework with a persistent finish of cherries and earth. Serious and yet utterly drinkable.

Matthew Rorick is creating wines in California, and more recently Australia, that are atypical in expression and often from collection of curious, less well-known grape varieties such as Alvarelhao and Petite Sirah. With time making wine in larger wineries in California such as Peter Michael and with time spent wine making in New Zealand, South Africa and Chile. These experiences helped formed his philosophy and coupled with his studies at UC Davis; Matthew created Forlorn Hope. Based out of Napa Valley in California Matthew does much of the work on his wines by himself. With a eagerness to express each site and vintage in bottle the use of adjustments, alterations or any type of manipulation is eschewed. Much of his fruit comes from vineyards owned by himself and family while he does seek out oddities from a collection of growers close by. A trip to Barossa to visit an old wine making friend saw the opportunity to create some ultra rare wines... thus Songs from Mars was born.

Pairing guide
Mmm. When it comes to big hearty dinners packed with savoury flavours, Grenache has to be one of our all-time favourite pairing wines. This juicy, unctuous, and moreish red from Songs from Mars is going to match up beautifully with almost any braised or slow-cooked red meat - lamb shanks in gravy, beef stew, Moroccan hotpots and tagines, especially - and is the perfect pairing for rabbit and other gamey meats, too. If that doesn’t sound quite like your thing, then worry not: Grenache is always a dead cert with family favourites like pizza, spaghetti bolognese, and lasagna.
