Details
Want rich and powerful Riesling? Here it is. Dense, a touch of residual sugar sweetness and a touch of botrytis...this is serious stuff. Reminds us of some of the examples of full throttle German Riesling. The main flavours are pear, lemon, chamomile, honey, herbs and hay. Delicious, but not a 'standard' bottle Riesling drinker. Embrace the difference.

Pyramid Valley is a special site in the North Canterbury region on the south island of New Zealand. Planted in 2000 by Claudia and Mike Weersing, it became a touchstone for biodynamic viticulture and sensitive winemaking in New Zealand. The home vineyards consisted of 4 blocks that formed the heart of the wine production, supplemented by organic and biodynamic vineyards from around the country. Each wine was unique, and bore the stamp of delicacy, power and complexity. German-born and America-raised Claudia was a committed biodynamicist and the guiding spirit on the land in the early years of Pyramid Valley. Mike studied oenology and viticulture in Burgundy and worked in vineyards and cellars across Europe, honing his precise vision and practice for spectacular winemaking. Together they created remarkable wines for close to 20 years that have been recognised the world over. Sadly in 2018 they sold the property to other interests and whilst the wines of Pyramid Valley do continue, they will not be born from Mike and Claudia's hands. Want rich and powerful Riesling? Pairing guide
This is such a unique wine, rich and powerful, with a real cornucopia of fruit aromas and a viscous texture. A hint of sweetness in there too. Food matching with wines like this can be a bit tricky, but throw in a bit of spice to balance out the sugar and things will end wonderfully. This aromatic and gently spiced Korean-style tofu dish is a real winner.

Wine region
North Canterbury, New Zealand
The North Canterbury wine region is located on South Island’s east coastline, spanning 200km with panoramic view of Alps to the west and the endless Pacific Ocean to the east. Long, cool and dry growing seasons are of major benefit to the local vines. This region produces superbly aromatic Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and fine Chardonnay. Notable sub-regions are Waipara Valley (one hour’s drive north of Christchurch) and Canterbury Plains (Southwest outskirts of Christchurch). Both regions feature gravel and alluvial deposits, and free draining clay and limestone soils.
