Details
Such a brilliant wine! Very bright and clean, with fragrant aromas of white flowers, ripe citrus and crushed rocks. It's a lovely balance between richness and freshness. The texture is round and creamy, but finishes with a flourish of acidity that balances things wonderfully and leave you licking your lips for more!
Bodega del Abad is a modern yet sensitive producer, located in the mountainous region of Bierzo, in the north-west of Spain. They specialise in only two varieties - the red Mencia & the white Godello. Godello is a white variety native to the Bierzo and Galicia regions. It's a variety that shows lovely florals and gentle apple notes on the nose and has lively acidity making it delicious with a wide array of foods. Relatively unknown in Australia, it is an important grape in Spain, and is gradually gaining more recognition overseas. Starting in 2000, the winery has slowly added more vineyards to its collection and now has some brilliant parcels of fruit across the region. Working harmoniously with nature, they grow grapes with a minimum of interference, using organic practices where possible. The winemaking follows a similar path, with long lees aging and minimal filtration to bring out the optimum texture in the wines and ensure they taste as good as possible. This is modern winemaking at its best - leaving the trickery behind, but learning exactly needs doing rather than doing everything for the sake of it. The resulting wines show a sense of place and purpose, and are deliciously drinkable.

Pairing guide
If you’re looking for the perfect salad-pairing wine for a light lunch with friends, then look no further - the zesty acidity of this Godello really hits the spot with all kinds of leafy greens and sharp salad dressings. It’s also a beautiful pairing for shrimp, especially when prepared simply with a brush of garlic oil and a squeeze of lemon. Godello really likes being matched up with citrus and chicken dishes, too, and can even handle a bit of chilli spice, such as found in Chinese Szechuan dishes and light tofu Thai noodle classics.

Wine region

Bierzo, Spain
Ah, Bierzo, Spain - the exception to the rule. Besides Bierzo, Spanish reds are often associated with big, oaky, high abv hammers made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Listen, there’s nothing wrong with that, dad! But if you’re looking for something a little more elegant, medium-bodied and finessed, look northwest to Spain’s most exciting region, Bierzo – just off the El Camino de Santiago (for the spiritual among us).
For the last 15 years, the Mencía grape has been giving Bierzo a major makeover! Mencía (related to cool-again Cabernet Franc) is pure fruited, mid-weight, with delicate balance and structure, making this wine a ‘drink now with or without food’ style.
Speaking of style. If you want more acid from Tempranillo, less ABV from Garnacha but still want to run with the bulls. Refresh your cellar with a stylish Mencía from Bierzo; you can keep the New Balance 530s, ‘they’re in’ and super practical along the Camino! Amen!
