Details
What a wine - just explodes from the glass with fragrant florals and wafts of intense citrus and peach. Freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit, intermingled with white flowers and jasmine. A hint of honey in there as well, but the wine is dry and fresh and utterly refreshing. One of Australia's best.
Australia’s wine scene is booming - there’s little doubt on that front - and it sometimes seems as though the majority of wineries we hear about are plucky start-ups, managed by young, ambitious newcomers on the scene. How easy it can be and how wrong it is to overlook those older, wiser, more established wineries who have paved the way for this new generation of vintners. Crawford River is a perfect example; set up in 1975 by John and Cathy Thomson on their family’s sheep farm in western Victoria, it set out to see just how good wine could be when made in this corner of Australia. The results were consistently impressive, with their Riesling quickly becoming iconic, and is now widely regarded as Australia's best. The rest of the stable of wines more than keeps up with this reputation. This family winery is still undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with, and more than capable of teaching these new faces on the scene a thing or two!

Pairing guide
Riesling is one of those grape varietals which almost never fails to make extremely food-friendly wines, and this beauty from Crawford River is no exception. We love this wine with hot and spicy southeast Asian cuisine, especially vegetarian, fish, or chicken Thai broths and noodle dishes, and it’s also going to be great with creamier Indian curries, too. If you want to keep things traditional, try this wine with a classic dish of Wiener schnitzel and potatoes, or pork chops with an apple sauce. It’s also going to be great with simple grilled fish or chicken and green salads, and makes a top pairing for seafood.

Wine region

Henty, Australia
Henty is a cool region conceived by Chief Viticulturist Karl Seppelt in 1964. Originally Henty was known only as prime grazing terrain, full of undulating hills, much like the rest of western Victoria, for quality wool! Nowadays, Riesling is hands down the stand-out variety in this region. Still, you can also find excellent cool climate renditions of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Shiraz Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Steady ripening in autumn, low but high-quality yields results in elegant and intensely flavourful wines. The Henty wine region encompasses a large part of Victoria, extending from the SA border of Coonawarra east to Hopkins River (Warrnambool longitude). Major subregions are Hamilton, think the textural delight that is Lethbridge Wines and Tarrington, the hard-to-say but easy to drink Hochkirch Wines. Yum!
