Details
Much of the Pinot Gris/Grigio made in Australia is lean and zesty, but this trends the other way! A plush wine with plenty of rich pear and quince notes, and a hint of ginger and white pepper. Much of the density in the wine comes from time spent in barrel, lending the wine weight and power.
Ahhhh…The Mornington Peninsula! It’s a place of adventure, a place to lose yourself in stunning wine country nestled between bayside beaches and rugged coastlines. You’ll find makers and creators of all types doing what they love to give you unforgettable experiences. Yep, its one special place and Chirping Bird has been happily roosting in the area since 1999. A dream was born when mum and dad birds (Rod and Mim Smallman) bought a 10 acre block on Stumpy Gully Road in Moorooduc. They had the idea of planting a small block of vines. But it wasn’t that easy - they had 2 small chicks to raise (Tyson and Lee) with another on the way (Tom)! The first vintage of Shiraz was 2001 and just like that, Chirping Bird was hatched and released into the wild. These days youngest son Lee does most of the work, focussing on the building of a new cellar door and expanding the range. This is a name to watch!

Pairing guide
We love a good Pinot Gris here at Good Pair Days. All those crisp, refreshing flavours and brightness make this a food pairing classic, which is going to pair beautifully with a wide range of seafood dishes, simple rice and vegetable favourites, and grilled or roasted chicken and turkey. It’s also going to be delicious with raw fish, so don’t hesitate to match it with your bento boxes, sushi platters, and poke bowls. Nice!

Wine region

Mornington Peninsula, Australia
Just an hour's drive south of Melbourne is the Pinot Paradise, also known as Mornington Peninsula.
The signature variety of the region is, without a doubt, Pinot Noir, accounting for over half of the region’s vines, followed by Chardonnay at 25% and Pinot Gris at 20%. Pinot Noir from this region is typically characterised by its refreshing acidity and purity. The deep colour may lead you to think these wines are potent, but in reality, the wines are elegant, pretty and medium-bodied at best.
Surrounded by Bass Strait, Port Phillip Bay and Western Port Bay in Victoria, Mornington Peninsula’s climate is uniquely maritime cool and breezy. In fact, no vineyard is further than 7km from the ocean! Some of the most notable producers in the Mornington Peninsula include Kooyong, Ten Minutes by Tractor, Stonier Wines and boutique wineries such as Montalto, Ocean Eight, and Quealy Wines.
