Details
Inspired by the Grenache blends of the southern Rhône, Grenache is the hero of this blend, alongside a fruit salad of red grapes including Carignan, Counoise, and Mourvèdre. Round, a little earthy, a little spicy, but full of red and black fruits, this feels both easy to love and yet full of spicy intrigue.
Yangarra isn't so much a wine business as a vineyard that turns the labours of the vine into wine. Located in the sandy soils of Kangarilla, in the upper part of McLaren Vale, the heart of this operation is a celebrated old plot of Grenache planted way back in 1946. Home to almost a quarter of the old vine Grenache in 'The Vale', the Yangarra Vineyard is also planted to a wondrous array of grape varieties, including the full complement of the 13 permitted varieties in the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape region (except Picardan). Farmed organically and biodynamically since 2008, the textured whites, savoury rosé and wildly charismatic reds from Yangarra are made with a fittingly complex array of methods to deliver some of the country's most interesting wines, whether it's the bright fragrance of Picpoul, the layered, concrete-egg-matured Ovitelli Grenache Blanc white or the legendary High Sands Grenache, with an array of intriguing Roussanne, Shiraz and blends in between.

Pairing guide
There really is so much going on here that it's a joy to pair with - the light and shade of red and black berries, plus a little earthen spicy edge, make this Grenache blend work so well with slow-cooked meaty dishes as a start. A lamb and red wine casserole is a meaty choice, or a mushroom and lentil cottage pie for something less meaty. Indeed, that polished, proper medium-bodied palate means a simple pumpkin pasta works nicely here too.
