Details
At 8 years of age this is still looking and smelling very young and fresh. Plenty of blackberry, raspberry and blackcurrant nuances, with just a slight green edge. There's secondary notes of fresh cedar/vanilla oak and some earthy undertones that become more evident as it opens up. It's smooth and seamless, unfolding with polished, fine-grained oak and chiselled tannins. Superb.

There are some wineries which are deeply, inextricably entwined within certain wine regions. When it comes to Coonawarra, where the terra rossa soils are as iconic as the vines which grow there, you can’t help but immediately think of Wynns. There’s no shortage of good reasons for this; Wynns has a heritage of winemaking in Coonawarra which extends back to the late 19th century, when the first vines were planted here by a Scottish entrepreneur. Across countless vintages, and a whole lot of standard-bearing for the Aussie wine scene in general, they continue to uphold a level of excellence that matches their clear love of this special part of the country. Today, Wynn’s is overseen by the formidable Sue Hodder, whose winemaking expertise has seen Wynn’s grow to become a bonafide international presence. Working with heritage vines which stretch back to those earliest pioneering days, alongside a number of newer varietals, she continues to impress with her savvy knowledge of what the Coonawarra Estate does best. With the esteemed Black Label collection continually expanding, one thing is for sure: Wynn’s aren’t going away anytime soon, and there’s a hell of a lot of their superb wine to fall head over heels in love with.

Pairing guide
You really can’t go wrong with a solid Cabernet Sauvignon at dinner time, and this deliciously full-bodied bottle from the popular Wynn’s Black Label does the job very nicely indeed. This is a wine that was just made to be paired with red meat dishes, especially those cooked low and slow in a thick gravy, or served with berry reductions or a wine jus. It’s also going to be great with wild mushrooms, eggplant, nutty sauces, and strong blue cheeses. Gorgeous!

Wine region
Coonawarra, Australia
Coonawarra is in the southeastern corner of South Australia, located in the Limestone Coast of South Australia, about 300 km southeast of Adelaide. The region experiences a maritime influence due to the upwelling of cold ocean currents. The main varieties grown in the region are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, and Chardonnay. Here you can find the legendary terra rossa soil, with its thin iron-oxide-based topsoil over limestone, giving it that unmistakable reddish hue. This soil type is believed to be a major contributing factor to the robust character of the wines. The Coonawarra wine region stretches about 15 km, with more than 50 wineries. Penfolds, Wynns, Balnaves, Rymil and Katnook Estate are among the most notable and historic in the region. Each of them produces highly sought Cabernet Sauvignon that is medium to full-bodied, with brood notes of cassis, blackberry, plum and dark cherry flavours. Structured with firm but plush tannins, the very best of them cellar gracefully for decades.
