Details
From high altitude vineyards, this Pinot is light on its feet with a range of complex flavours. Not only keen fruit - plum, cherry, rhubarb and pomegranate - but also dried herbs and a dusting of red earth. The palate is fresh and lean with oak spices adding to the picture. Dry and savoury on the finish.

When we think of Italian wine country, we often think of the sun-baked Mediterranean coast, the verdant islands or the rolling hills of Tuscany. However, one of the finest and most highly respected wine regions of Italy is decidedly more mountainous, and considerably more Germanic than what immediately comes to mind. The Alpine region of Alto Adige is based in the foothills of the Alps, and this lush, green part of the country has been producing truly beautiful wines for hundreds of years. The winery of Wilhelm Walch is a great and traditional example of an Alto Adige winery, and for five generations and one hundred and fifty years it has helped shape the region and forge its reputation, while also bringing it into the twenty-first century. Run today by the latest generation of the Walch family, it now focuses on low-yields of exceptional quality, bringing a touch of Alpine class and freshness to the Italian wine market, and the rest of the world. Wilhelm Walch, as the name suggests, is an Italian winery with a distinctly German feel. This is typical in Alto Adige, and results in crisp white wines with a complex minerality, such as those found in the best regions of Germany. But here, among the Dolomite mountains which shield the vineyards from the harsh northern winds, there is a distinctive Italian flair to proceedings which produces wines of real, distinctive character.

Pairing guide
Pinot Noir has got to be the all-time champion when it comes to food-friendly red wine varietals. Elegant and silky, this gorgeous Pinot really hits the spot with loads of meat and vegetable dishes, especially lamb, duck, sausages, and mushrooms and eggplant. It’s lovely with slightly bitter greens - think kale and broccoli - and is going to go well with rich tomato sauces and ragus.

Wine region
Alto Adige, Italy
Alto Adige is an alpine region located at the southern tip of Tyrol, Austria, making it Italy’s most northern wine region. Given the region’s long history as a border town, it’s perhaps no surprise that German is the local language here. This goes some way to explain the melting pot of varieties available here, where you’ll find Austrian, German, French and native varieties in peaceful co-existence. But there’s no doubt that the French-turned-Italian Pinot Grigio is the hero of this region! The elevation ranges from 200m-1000m above sea level, but local wisdom has found 350m-550m to be the optimum for ripeness and avoiding frost! Higher elevations of Alto Adige around Bolzano grow especially good Riesling, Sylvaner, Kerner and Veltliners. But the lower slopes of Alto Adige yield the region’s legendary Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco, and to a lesser extent, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. The region also makes delicious reds, including Lagrein, Schiava and Pinot Noir!
