Details
Valley and Valley wines is a nod to the two main valleys that make up the Barossa region. The cool Eden Valley, with its rocky soils and frosty nights, and the Barossa Valley, with its lush dark red soils and heat. Blend Shiraz grapes from the two, and voila, a well-balanced Shiraz! This is a plump, plummy, medium- to full-bodied Barossan red with lots of blue and red fruit flavour and an easy, generous softness.
Despite its multi-century grapegrowing history, even the Barossa isn't immune to the challenges of new development, so it was in 2017 that the last few hectares of a prime Shiraz vineyard in Nuriootpa were listed as a 'development site' and threatened with a bulldozer. That is, until Madeleine Chapman plus friends bought the plot to keep making wine. And who could blame them for wanting to keep this resource? A block of vines planted in the 1920s that has long gone into wines for Penfolds & Peter Lehmann, now looking for a new home. In the years since, the Chapmans have focused on revitalising the old Welland vineyard and using it as the basis for their brand. Interestingly, the Welland wines don't stop at the farm gate either, with wines in the lineup crafted from grapes all over South Australia, along with some gloriously lush Shiraz.

Pairing guide
The secret to the gentle chocolatey richness and that spiced plummy fruit is about using all the tools at your disposal - Eden Valley fruit gives a little more darkness and mocha, while the Barossa Valley more plums, and then using a little new American oak to mature the wine in gives the choc coconut lusciousness. It all adds up to a red with some flavour that just loves a BBQ. Smoky pork, sausages, ribs, smoky eggplant, hearty soups, the lot. It's not a very full-bodied red, so no need to go full caveman, but BBQ meat and vegetables are this wine's pairing jam.
