Details
Doug's wines are such made fun, and this new Picpoul is no difference. Made from organically grown grapes, this is all about shepherding those bright and juicy flavours into a bottle. It smells and tastes of sun-kissed golden fruit, a little blossom and then crisp yellow apple and yellow peach. Yes, it's like a crisp Sea Breeze, but what this tastes of is beautifully sunny fruit, in a skin contact style that is pure and refreshing (if very limited)!

Have you ever wanted to make wine at home for entertainment? That's how Doug Woodward began, fermenting things in the spare room of his suburban Brisbane house circa 2018 before releasing a tiny volume under the Wedded to the Weather label. As you can imagine, this was hands-on winemaking from the start, with each batch only 500-600kg of grapes and all hand pressed/bottled. But those early releases were so well received that in 2023, he moved to the Barossa to share a winery with small batch legends Sven Joschke Wines, Sigurd Wines and Rasa Wines and step up in size. Doug still makes his natural wines in micro batches (50 case lots), too, using organic grapes from the super progressive Basshams vineyard in the Riverland, all made using wild ferments, no fining or filtration and only a dab of sulphur at bottling (sometimes). Doug likes interesting Mediterranean grape varieties, too (no Shiraz here), and when coupled with a love of orange wines and Pet Nats, it makes for some of the most fun natural wines we've tried in ages.

Pairing guide
Spritely, crisp and utterly delicious, this Picpoul from Wedded to the Weather is right up there with our absolute favourites this month. All that bright and refreshing character makes it a wonderful food-pairing wine, and it’s especially good with seafood or fish curries, fried and battered chicken, white fish or oysters. Pork chops with herb gremolata will pair very nicely indeed, we loved it with lemon and herb risotto, and it’s also great with fried rice dishes and crispy noodles, too.

Wine region
Riverland, Australia
Located in the heart of South Australia, the Riverland wine region is a tropical paradise for wine lovers. The region was formerly known for its traditional wines, particularly Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Grenache as well as its abundance of sunshine and beautiful scenery. In the last few years it's added a raft of Mediterranean varieties to its charm - think Fiano and Nero d'Avola. The warm climate and fertile soils of the Riverland make it a perfect place for grape growing, and the wines produced there are bursting with flavour. So why not explore the wines of the Riverland and discover a new favourite?
