Details
Paler in the glass than you'd expect, and it's a bit of a trick, given the weight the wine carries. Starts out mellow enough, with pale red fruits, thyme, basil and dirt. Then moves into full fruit mode - raspberry, rose, cured meat, dried cherry. Oaky as well. Rich, dry and bold.
Watkins wine is a family affair. Started by David and Ros Watkins, back in the mid 90s, Watkins Wine has moved from a beacon of quality in the Langhorne Creek region to recently setting up shop in the Adelaide Hills. With this move comes a fresh outlook, not to mention some fresh packaging on the wines! These days, there's more of the influence of the offspring - Sam, Ben and Jo. Covering winemaking, Accounting and Marketing between them, they offer the ideal 'triple threat' of skills to take this family business to the next level. With a wide range of varieties planted across the two regions, and Sam's winemaking background that covers a host of different wine regions in 3 different countries, there's ample scope for inspiration and innovation. For now, the aim is to coax the best flavours possible from their grapes, but this trio has an eye on the future, so keep your eyes peeled and your tastebuds ready for what Watkins does next!

Pairing guide
There’s a reason why Sangiovese is widely regarded as one of the best red wines for food pairing - it matches so very well with the kinds of dishes we all love to sit down, share, and enjoy with those nearest and dearest to us. Tomato ragùs are the obvious match to aim for, but it’s also great with Fiorentina-style steak, Tuscan bean stews and salads, lamb chops, homemade pizza, and roast pork belly. Grilled veggies, prosciutto and other cured pork products, and gnocchi with sage butter are also superb choices!

Wine region

Langhorne Creek, Australia
The Langhorne Creek is a wine region in South Australia that is best known for its rich, full-bodied red wines such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The region has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, and a cooling influence from nearby Lake Alexandrina which helps moderate the temperature. All of which makes this region ideal for producing high-quality and age-worthy red wines. In fact, the region is responsible for a large portion of the red grapes used in wines all over the state! The region also produces some white wines, particularly Chardonnay, but it's the red that makes up the lion's share of plantings. The region is surrounded by picturesque countryside and has a long history of grape growing and winemaking dating back to the 1850s.
