Details
This Pinotage is a great cross between the old and new-school South African styles. On the one hand, there are shedloads of ripe, dark cherry-spiced fruit and plenty of milk chocolate. But this isn't some swashbuckling heavyweight. Instead, there's a lightness here that feels fun and fresh and a bit flirty. A 'woah, dad has been working out!' vibe to it, and still a champion BBQ choice (just like Dad).

James Bond's South African winery of choice, the first producer to bottle a 'Cape Blend' and the first with a varietal Cabernet Franc. Oh yes, Warwick Estate has a legendary winemaking history. But when the pioneering Ratcliffe family sold Warwick Estate back in 2017, everyone wondered whether this African wine institution would change, especially with new American owners. Flash forward a few vintages, and Warwick Estate is firing. With a change of winemaking ethos, this famously red wine-focused Stellenbosch producer is making brighter wines than ever, especially the new releases of Cabernet blends and Pinotage. Want to experience traditional South African wine styles, but with a bit of modern swishness? Warwick is it.

Pairing guide
Deliciously rich and deeply flavourful, this bold bottle of Pinotage is a superb choice for wine for all kinds of hearty, meaty and powerfully savoury dishes. Barbecued beef and lamb is always going to be a good choice, as is beef rib casseroles, grilled chicken thighs and roast duck. South African classics like bobotie and bunny chow will surely satisfy the senses, and it’s also great with veggie favourites like braised lentils, stuffed red capsicums and cheesy eggplant bakes.

Wine region
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Stellenbosch is one of South Africa’s premier wine regions, located in the Western Cape, outside Cape Town. In South Africa, wine regions are known as winelands. Stellenbosch means ‘town of oaks’ and its winemaking dates back to the 17th century. The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep well-drained soils and diversity of terroirs make this a sought-after viticultural area. The wineland itself is known for high quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay as well as the local speciality, Pinotage.
