Details
Wangolina are actually the second largest producer of Mencía in Australia - championing this unheralded grape variety... and from tasting this, we can see why! It's medium-bodied, bright, fruity and pretty. Really easy drinking, the flavours are driven by pomegranate and rhubarb, some blood orange, and then on the finish it turns earthy/ metallic, with soft tannins. Easy and quaffable, this could be drunk chilled.
Wangolina is a modern, forward-thinking winery situated between the coastal towns of Kingston & Robe in the Mt Benson region of the Limestone Coast. Whilst the property has been in family hands since the 1800s, vines were first planted in 1999 by John & Anita Goode with plantings of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon & Sauvignon Blanc. Now under the watchful eye of daughter Anita, the vineyard has also expanded to include Pinot Gris, Grüner Veltliner and northern Italian native Malvasia Istriana. In 2001, Anita harvested and made the first vintage from the Wangolina vineyard and, since then, has never looked back. She worked vintages in Washington and Oregon and Langhorne Creek, the Hunter Valley and Tasmania before returning home and taking the reins full-time in 2013. Anita wears many hats at Wangolina: winemaker, vineyard manager and farmer on her 700-acre cattle farm. All of these roles she fulfils with passion, pride and dedication. The cool climate and coastal location of the vineyard mean that the wines are naturally fresh and built around acidity. Anita's appreciation of the global wine scene ensures they remain balanced between fruit and freshness—a hidden gem of a producer.

Pairing guide
Mencía wines have been increasingly on our radar over the past few years, and after checking out this beautiful red from Wangolina, it isn’t hard to see why the Spanish varietal is the toast of the town right now. This wine is best paired with grilled red meats, cured pork products, and rich casseroles and stews featuring punchy pimenton and paprika spices. It’s also a top wine to match with ‘nduja pizza and pasta dishes, classics like spaghetti puttanesca, empanadas and other stuffed meaty pastries, and with salads which make fine use of offal like lamb's liver.
