Details
This grape is originally from the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia’s north-west, and skin contact fermentation is also common practice in this region for their white varieties. This then is a South Australian example of this traditional style - on skins for 7 days, it shows exotic aromas of jasmine, white nectarine and brown pear. The weight of fruit coats the mouth, and it finishes with notes of cardamom and nutmeg, ensuring a savoury, slightly chewy finish.

Wangolina is a modern, forward-thinking winery situated between the coastal towns of Kingston & Robe in the Mt Benson region of the Limestone Coast. Whilst the property has been in family hands since the 1800s, vines were first planted in 1999 by John & Anita Goode with plantings of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon & Sauvignon Blanc. Now under the watchful eye of daughter Anita, the vineyard has also expanded to include Pinot Gris, Grüner Veltliner and northern Italian native Malvasia Istriana. In 2001 Anita harvested and made the first vintage from the Wangolina vineyard and since then has never looked back. She worked vintages in Washington and Oregon, as well as Langhorne Creek, the Hunter Valley and Tasmania, before returning home and taking the reins full time from 2013. Anita wears many hats at Wangolina; winemaker, vineyard manager and farmer to her 700 acre cattle farm. All of these roles she fulfils with passion, pride and dedication. The cool climate and coastal location of the vineyard mean that the wines are naturally fresh and built around acidity, and Anita's appreciation of the global wine scene ensures they remain balanced between fruit and freshness. A hidden gem of a producer!

Pairing guide
It’s great to discover another Aussie winery experimenting most successfully with Malvasia grapes, and Wangolina’s release showcases just how good those Limestone Coast vineyards can be. Malvasia wines are always happiest with shellfish and seafood dishes - even the humblest prawn cocktail is going to be elevated to new heights with this wine! Pasta dishes with white fish, shellfish or heartier fish like tuna will work well, and it’s also delicious with green salads, vegetarian paella and other rice dishes, and funky cheeses like a very ripe camembert or gorgonzola dolce.
