Details
This is a fresh and fruit-driven style of Malbec, made by a process called carbonic maceration where each individual grape ferments within itself, leading to bright, fruity flavours. This has gorgeous black cherry, raspberry and plum pudding aromas with notes of spice, chocolate, coffee and leather. Super-juicy with acidity and balanced tannins, this is a different style to classic Malbec and a most welcome variation!

Years ago, winemaker, Tomás Stahringer, went on a trip of a lifetime – living it up in Mexico on the Day of the Dead. In Aztec culture, the skull imagery during the DoD is a tribute to life in the face of death. Ever since, Tomás has followed a philosophy that 'if you wake up every morning fearing death, you won’t be able to enjoy life!' Sure enough, destiny came knocking in 2007. While honing his craft at Bodegas Polo in Mendoza, Argentina – Tomás would become an overnight success. From ‘garagiste’ winemaker with only two barrels worth of Uco Valley juice, 500 bottles in his parent's garage to becoming a future (oc)cult classic! These redolent wines were a hit among collectors selling out in just two months. Review after review, it was clear this small-batch Malbec was the real deal; and so became the skull-laden label known as Vinyes Ocults, a homage to an adopted philosophy and a juicy reminder of Tomás’ zest for life! Tomás’ trajectory seems written in the stars or perhaps in the sandy soils of Uco Valley, Mendoza. Today his production has expanded to a modest 20,000 bottles ranging from his first love of Malbec, but also a Bordeaux-like blend, Viognier, and Sparkling wines to suit many a wicked occasion.

When it comes to food pairing, it’s always going to be a good idea to match Malbec with grilled red meat - the smokier the better. Whether you go for a smoked bacon recipe, a rack of ribs, game meats, homemade burgers or pulled pork or lamb - or a veggie alternative with smoked tofu, grilled eggplant, mixed beans or charred Mediterranean vegetables - is entirely up to you!
