Details
Blauburgunder = Austrian for Pinot Noir. This light and pretty Pinot is a Euro-leaning style, too, in a subtle, chillable red sort of mode. It's crunchy, light-bodied, and very fresh, with a little dried herb, snappy cherry fruit and a real sense of gentle, light-touch prettiness. Pitched as a luncheon wine, and watch the bottle empty.

Beechworth is arguably Victoria's finest wine-growing region, where these two 'Vignerons' have made a home. Architect Jeremy Schmölzer & winemaker Tessa Brown fell in love over a decade ago and forged an incredibly arduous, expensive, and dedicated 'retirement' plan to become not only a family but to be first-generation grape growers. And while still a young couple, our wine 'grower producer' friends combined their unique skillsets and found a picturesque yet fertile, high-altitude site in Beechworth's cooler subregion of Stanley. This magical snowy vineyard is known as 'Thorley' and was planted in 2013. Like a 'yet-to-be-discovered' famous artist, 'Thorley' is already starting to produce wines of uncompromising quality. The couple do everything themselves, with decisions founded in equality, from the winemaking to cooking dinner. Tessa tends to the vineyard with her whip-smart secateurs skills, boasting a palate better than anyone we know, and is an emasculating weapon managing a fully-fledged winery. Jer, has a reputation for being meticulous, he is exacting in what he wants in the style of their wine, and has an incredible eye for detail - from a state-of-the-art vineyard that is waiting to be featured in an architecture magazine. Add their yet-to-be-built winery and cellar door, which will be a spot we will visit in the coming years.

Pairing guide
We love a good bottle of Pinot Noir at Good Pair Days HQ, and this beautiful release from Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown ticked all the right boxes as far as we’re concerned. If you’re looking for a truly versatile red wine, look no further - this stunner is going to be as good with a steak dinner as will be with roasted root vegetables, hearty chicken and paprika stew, seared tuna steak and pasta classics like spaghetti bolognese. Chicken and bacon combos, medium to strong cheeses, and roasted tomato traybakes will also all work a treat with this one.

Wine region
Beechworth, Australia
Nestled in the rolling hills of Victoria, Australia, the Beechworth wine region is a hidden gem for wine lovers. With a history dating back to the 1860s, this cool climate region is known for producing top-notch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But don't let these wineries' small, boutique size fool you - the family-owned operations in Beechworth are serious about their craft, using traditional techniques to coax maximum flavour from the region's mineral-rich soils. Beechworth has had its ups and downs over the years; almost all of its vines were wiped out by disease in the early 1900s. The 1950s saw significant investment and the realisation of this small region's potential paved the way for some of Victoria's most prestigious wine producers. So grab a glass, let your hair down, and discover why Beechworth is the ultimate destination for wine lovers. Cheers!
