Details
This is some very clever Chardonnay. Hand-picked grapes, wild yeast fermentation, whole bunch pressing, lees stirring. Everything in the winemakers kitbag tricks for making Chardy with complexity and flavour. But, importantly, the Varney Chardonnay spends just seven months in oak which gives this wine an extra lift of energy and freshness. Grapefruit, green apple, chalk and then this lovely clean finish.

As Alan Varney says, it all started as a ‘tonne for fun’. For many years, Alan was a winemaker for other people and decided a decade or so ago to make a little wine on the side from his favourite vineyards in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. One thing led to another, and by 2019, Alan had a winery in McLaren Vale making a swag of fun vino! The Varney Wines lineup is properly eclectic, too, spanning everything from local Arinto (a Portuguese grape that apparently loves the heat of McLaren Vale), Vermentino, Grenache and Mencia right through to Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, Syrah and Nebbiolo. Alan's wines are typically generous but never feel like they're heavy, with that array of fun Mediterranean grapes making for all sorts of savoury textures.

Pairing guide
Effortlessly bright, racy and luxuriant, this beautiful Chardonnay from Varney Wines is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, sure to convert even those who swore off Chardonnay in the mid 2000s. We love pairing this wine with unctuous buttery pasta dishes, anything featuring richer seafood like crab, lobster and Moreton Bay bugs, and dishes which make a star ingredient of avocado. Smoked salmon and other smoked fish, spicy belly pork, and coconut-based curries are also a winner.

Wine region
Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
