Details
Morellino is an ancient Tuscan name for Sangiovese, apparently named after either the local brown horses or the deliciously tart Italian morello cherries. This Morellino di Scansano is a blend of Sangiovese and a salad of local, indigenous grapes. The result is chock-full of cherry delights, capped off with a fresh finish and the trademark late, mouth-coating Sangiovese tannins.

Tuscany is a giant wine region stretching from the wild mountains of the Apennines (home to a small population of endangered Italian brown bears) right through to the sandy beaches of Grosseto. With so much varied countryside, is it any wonder that winery hidden jewels - like Val delle Rose - could be around the next hillside? Until the 1990s, Val delle Rose was a small winemaking operation with just 25ha of vineyards in coastal Tuscany. Yet the Cecchi family of Chianti Classico saw the potential of the local Sangiovese grapes and went big, quadrupling the plantings to help put the winery's famously gentle and generous reds on the map. Nowadays, Val Delle Rose is the hero producer of the Morellino di Scansano appellation, with the sandy soil and seaside position helping to make dry and refreshing white wines from Vermentino grapes, plus seriously delicious, Sangiovese-based reds renowned for their red berry prettiness and sandy tannins.
