You can’t talk about exceptional modern Australian wines without some mention of Yarra Valley. Garrie and Julie Hounsell, the managers of Toolangi Vineyards, fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening this estate, and quickly set about planting the finest vines they could get their hands on. Fast forward a couple of years, and they found themselves with small-yielding crops of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz vines - classic Australian varietals - alongside some other species, such as Viognier, to help keep things interesting. They quickly gained the attention of the wine press, who have delivered plenty of praise for their produce over the years, but they are always quick to remind their admirers that the real hard work is done not by themselves, but by the land they work on. Their vineyards benefit from the gentle slopes of Yarra Valley, and complex soils of clay and shale which give their wines their distinctive character.
