Details
The Tibaldi sisters have slightly downplayed this delicious red by simply calling it 'Langhe Nebbiolo', which is the basic regional classification. Yet this red comes from the certified organic Bricco delle Passere vineyard in Roero and is beautiful. Medium-bodied, with the red berry energy that Roero Nebbiolo is famous for, it smells of violets and roses, with a palate that leans towards raspberry, red and black cherry and no oak to get in the way of the energy.
Monica and Daniela Tibaldi inherited a passion for grapes and vines from their father Stefano and grandfather Tunin, who were both grapegrowers, farming in the sandy soils of Roero in Piedmont. Winemaking, however, is something the family hadn't attempted before, or at least until Monica & Daniela took the plunge in 2014 to create their own wine brand. The (now certified organic) family vineyards are the backbone of this label, with local hero grapes like Arneis, Barbera, Favorita and Nebbiolo as the big focus here, grown across vineyards crossing three hills with all sorts of different terrains and exposures. The wines are typically fresh, as is the way in Roero, with a great energy found across the range from white to red.

Pairing guide
Some Piedmont Nebbiolo can be slightly unapproachable, with fierce tannins as a trademark that makes the reds a challenge to pair with anything but formidably flavoursome foods. But this take is so much brighter and less firm that you can avoid a red meat-heavy option altogether. Antipasti is the first pairing choice here, with a plate of meats and cheeses just feeling right, and chicken thighs in tomato sauce or roast pork with plenty of crackling are natural choices for anyone feeling carnivorous. Interestingly, this is a wonderful drink with white beans, as the creaminess of our legume champ is a great contrast to the crisp red-berried Nebbiolo too.
