Details
Deep, almost inky in the glass, this Shiraz opens with dark fruit: blackberry, plum and a savoury iron note (think the smell of a cast-iron pan warming up). Underneath sits woodsmoke, sour red berries, rhubarb and pepper. On the palate it's medium to full-bodied, with grippy tannins and a brooding, earthy edge that feels grounded and honest. There's a lovely lift of dark cherry through the middle, and the finish lingers long, savoury and fresh.
Alex Schulkin started The Other Right in 2012, bringing almost two decades of wine science experience and a stubborn belief that there's more than one way to make a beautiful wine. The name says it all: an alternative to the idea that only one method counts. From a small base in Ashton, tucked into the Adelaide Hills, Alex has spent over a decade proving his point, one small-batch release at a time. Since 2016, every wine has come from vineyards farmed organically and sustainably, long-term partners who share his outlook on how a vineyard should be treated. In the winery, the philosophy is grapes and nothing else, with each wine left to develop at its own pace. That demands real skill: reading a ferment carefully, solving problems as they come up rather than reaching for a fix in a bottle. The payoff is wine that feels alive: precise, pure and full of character!

Pairing guide
This is a wine for cooler nights and slow-cooked food. Think a rich beef and red wine casserole, lamb shoulder braised until it falls apart, or a mushroom and thyme pie with buttery pastry. The iron note in the wine has a natural affinity with red meat, especially anything cooked over coals or finished with a peppery crust. It also holds up well to umami-heavy dishes like a mushroom ragu or a hard, aged cheddar. For something more special, pair it with slow-braised beef cheeks or a proper Sunday roast lamb with rosemary and garlic. Keep the sides simple: mashed potato, roasted root vegetables, and let the wine take centre stage.

Wine region

Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges
of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
