An intriguing wine that starts all soft and gentle and then comes out of nowhere to bite you (in a good way!) The nose is lush and full of raspberry conserve and mulberry jam. Seems soft and smooth and a little sweet, with a hint of eucalypt. Then the palate opens up and really grows on you with depth and grip. There's tannin in there, and some dark spiced oak. Pulls it all into line nicely.
Marnie Roberts and Kate Giles are the two 'dilettantes' in question here, but thankfully they say that their inspiration for their name comes from the Italian word 'dilettare', meaning 'to delight', rather than the English meaning of the word - a person who cultivates an area of interest, without real commitment or knowledge. They've certainly committed to these wines, and the results are plain to see. Marnie is an established winemaker who spends most of her time dealing with her own label, Matriarch and Rogue. She focuses on 'alternative' varieties like Tempranillo, Fiano, Nero d'Avola and the like. So Sangiovese fits into that line up quite wonderfully. She is ably assisted by Kate, who although a marketer by trade, isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and help out in the winery. Together they combine their powers to take single vineyard Sangiovese from the Clare Valley and craft the grapes into a lush, modern expression of Australian-styled red.

Ah, Sangiovese! This beautiful red grape varietal never fails to work perfectly with rustic dishes, homemade favourites, and anything featuring the punchy acidity of fresh or cooked tomato, or the aromatically delicious addition of garlic. The most obvious choice for this lovely South Australian Sangiovese would be a pasta dish swimming in a thick and glossy tomato sauce or meat ragu, but we also love this wine with roast pork or chicken, homemade burgers, or anything with grilled bell peppers. Spaghetti and meatballs is a classic pairing, as is lasagna, pizza, and parmigiana.
