Details
This is just the second Nebbiolo release for TarraWarra after they completely replanted the Nebbiolo block to future-proof it. This grape is such a tricky thing to get right, but the TarraWarra team have delivered something that works pretty nicely - it smells of cherries, roses, and autumn leaves with a dry and powerful (yet still medium-bodied) palate that is very savoury and serious. Open this up and pour into a big glass to watch it change - it's quite a ride!
TarraWarra is a Yarra Valley estate that has everything - a vineyard, winery, celebrated restaurant and a nature reserve (with a famous art museum next door). Interestingly, 'Tarrawarra' is a local Aboriginal word that translates as ‘slow-moving water’ and is the name given to the area around the estate (apparently, the term refers to a bend in the nearby Yarra River). This rather special place now has a forty-year winemaking history, with a pretty grand reputation for Yarra Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, further helped by having local Yarra gun winemaker Sarah Fagan in the winery. Not fans of standing still, there's now a complement of quality Italian grapes (like Barbera and Nebbiolo) in the vineyard too (because why not?).

Pairing guide
Savoury and very serious, this style of Nebbiolo is a wine to ponder over - a real slow food wine, that you need to give time to show its best. We think this intriguing red is going to pair very well with autumnal flavours; pumpkin, roast butternut squash, chestnuts, truffle, wild mushrooms and plenty of smoked garlic, and will also work beautifully with slow-cooked and roasted red meats. Italian ragu recipes, a meat-feast pizza and sweet potato gnocchi with sage butter would also hit the spot perfectly.
