Details
Zingy Sauvignon Blanc with mint and fresh peas; married up alongside rapier-sharp Riesling with green apple and lime. Sure, these grapes don't often share a bottle, but with this kind of result we're surprised! The acid levels harmonise really well, and the overall feeling is one of freshness and lightness. A bottle that disappears quickly.

Steve Tierney has spent his whole life around the vineyards of the Limestone Coast. He grew up watching harvest trucks roll through town every autumn, and by the time he'd finished his oenology degree at the University of Adelaide he was already several vintages deep working the region's limestone-rich soils. Years later, he's still there, still finding new ways to work with the fruit he knows best. Strange Friends is a bit of a joking name, but serious wine - what happens when you put two grapes together that have no business sharing a bottle? Riesling brings the perfume and the racing acid. Sauvignon Blanc brings the punch of citrus and cut grass. On paper they're an odd pairing. In the glass, they get on like old friends who've just met. Each variety is fermented separately, cool and slow, to hold onto the aromatics before blending. The fruit comes from cool, elevated sites across the Limestone Coast, where the region's famous terra rossa soils and maritime breeze keep the grapes fresh right through to picking. The result is a wine built for people who like their whites lively, food-friendly and a little unexpected. That's the whole idea behind Strange Friends: good things happen when you stop worrying about the rules.

Pairing guide
A Sauvignon Blanc is always a tough wine to beat when it comes to versatility and food pairing perfection, but make it an equal parts mix with Riesling and this wonderful white wine from Strange Friends is no exception. Brilliant with white fish, salmon and seafood dishes, excellent with simple chicken breast preparations, and ideal with vegetarian dishes making a star ingredient of asparagus, snow peas and green beans, it’s sure to delight the senses. Lemon and herb dressings will work especially well, as will spicy tofu recipes, Thai curries and summer rolls.

Limestone Coast, Australia
The Limestone Coast is a large wine zone in the south-east of South Australia which has six wine regions that comprise the Limestone Coast; Coonawarra, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Padthaway, Robe and Wrattonbully. The Limestone Coast is in a unique position with cool winds and ocean waters throughout the summer months thanks to an oceanic event called the Bonney Upwelling which helps keep the vineyards cool during the hot summer months. The Limestone Coast produces a wide range of quality wines from classic Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in Coonawarra to cool-climate varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Robe and Mount Gambier. It is truly a versatile area and one of the backbones of the Australian wine industry.
