Details
A full-throttle, traditional expression of this great grape. There's a backdrop of ripe citrus and fresh peaches, overlaid with creamed corn and ripe melon. A reassuring wine, with creamy oak making its impact felt. Despite this the wine isn't heavy, and acid takes the reins, but maintains some fatness on the edges. A classic interpretation, with plenty of flavour.
Small Valley Wines is an off-shoot of the famous Kaesler winery in the Barossa Valley, an icon of the Australian wine scene. With vineyards planted in the mid 1800s, and owned by the same family for over 100 years, the Kaesler name is Barossa royalty! These days the winery is in another phase of its life, with some outside investment backing local winemakers to take the wines to the next level. Although the Barossan wines are obviously focussed on reds, a few years ago they purchased a small vineyard in Gumeracha, in the Adelaide Hills, and began making high quality Chardonnay under the Small Valley name. The commitment to quality remains the same, with an increased focus on sustainability and vineyard management. The resultant wines are all the better for it, with more detail and life. Across the range, the power of the wines is something to behold, but they are balanced and in some cases even elegant! There's no resting on laurels either, with the top winemakers spending time overseas learning new things on a regular basis. As the tradition continues, one eye is on the future, and the wines show that wonderfully.

Pairing guide
This Chardonnay from Small Valley instantly impressed all of us here at Good Pair Days, and from the very first sip, we knew it would be an absolute champ when it comes to food pairing with some of our favourite ingredients. As versatile as they come, this white wine is going to be really delicious with everything from rustic vegetable soups to steamed cod, and from buttery shrimp to chicken risotto or pasta tossed in creamy sauces. We also reckon it’s a top wine for sushi pairing, too, and just as good with your ceasar salad or butter chicken curry!

Wine region

Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges
of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
