Details
Small Island cut their teeth into Pinot Noir in 2015 and they have truly produced some world beaters with their masterful approach to the king of grapes. The Black Pinot Noir is a blend of two vineyards that the winery uses to complement each other. There is more complementing going on than a high school prom night. Bright cherries, wild strawberries and a lovely layer of spice that brings everyone together for the final dance. You look great.. no , you look amazing!

Tasmania has a deep history in producing wine and holds the mantle for being the first state in Australia to make the stuff, dating back to the 1820s. Yes, there was a large spell where the state was focused on other things like making delicious beer and cider but it eventually found its way back to wine and man, are we grateful! One of the rising stars to the Tassie wine gang is James Broinowski who started Small Island Wines in 2015. Initially he focused on producing Pinot Noir from four different sites across the Apple Isle, yet now he has a few more strings to his bow with some delicious Chardonnay and a very scarce Gamay. The first thing that stands out are his labels which feature the extinct, unless you are a true believer, Tasmanian Tiger. The initial labels were lovingly hand painted which certainly drew our eyes to the wines. James is producing a fantastic range of wines in a modern, expressive way highlighting the fact that you shouldn’t paint Tassie wine with the same brush.

Wine region
Coal River Valley, Australia
Coal River Valley is a wine region located in southern Tasmania, an hour drive from Hobart. There is a wave of high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir coming out of the region with waves of mainland wineries setting up in this truly premium region. The region receives a good amount of rainfall and has typical Tassie weather which endears it to a cool climate style. There is a lovely array of family wineries who have been in the region since the 1970s along with the influx of larger wineries who are snapping up land where possible. A region to watch as the growth and quality continues to rise.
