Details
Ralph Allen Graham (RAG) was Dan Graham's late father, who Dan calls 'thought-provoking and hard-working', and this light and spicy red is a bit of a homage. Mainly Syrah but with a bit of Viognier and Mataro, it's a summer wine that tastes of forest fruits and what Dan describes as 'Christmas spice' that feels a bit frisky but with excellent crunch and energy with just enough black fruit generosity. Serve this chilled for some real summer vibes!
Sigurd was Dan Graham's grandfather - a Norwegian-born larrikin who was famously shot twice in WWI during some random absconding mischievousness and was an icon for his family (Sigurd is also Dan's middle name). The Graham family ended up in the wine industry, with Dan following in his winemaking father's footsteps to make wine around the world before settling in the Barossa. An important part of Dan's journey was a stint at Jacob's Creek, where he quickly realised that conventional industrial wine production just wasn't his jam. As a result, all the Sigurd wines come from vineyards farmed organically, and his winemaking mode is expressive, with lo-fi wines with minimal additions, natural fermentation, and a real sense of transparency. While the Barossa is the focus, he has also crafted wines from organic plots as far afield as Orange in NSW, just for entertainment and diversity.

Pairing guide
Spicy red blends with a bit of a summery vibe, like this red from Sigurd, are really quite adaptable things that will pair with a fair ocean of different meals, although with the caveat that you don't want flavours that are too heavy because they will dominate what is still a light red. Spicy dips, spiced eggplant, cured meats, hard cheeses, and fresh flavours are the go here, and with a preference for spice rather than raw chilli heat in your recipes. This red would be wonderful with a picnic and antipasto plate too, with the lightness and brightness making it a surprising friend to darker-skinned fish like salmon or mackerel too.

Wine region

South Australia, Australia
South Australia is a wide and varied state when it comes to wine production. From the coastal regions of Limestone Coast and McLaren Vale, to the warmer inland valleys of Barossa and Eden, to the flats of Langhorne Creek, there's a range of terroirs and temperatures across this wide brown land. As a result, wines labelled with only South Australia can display a range of flavours! The state is probably best known for Shiraz, Grenache and Cab Sav in reds, and Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in white. Whatever your flavour, there's plenty to explore!
