Details
Durif famously makes heroic full-bodied reds, especially in Rutherglen. But here, Rowly and team have turned that around and delivered a light, fresh and lively rosé with hints of rosewater, a little pink candied fruit (but don't be fooled, this is bone dry wine), and lovely freshness.

Scion Wines is the creation of Rowly, a talented young winemaker who has made a living out of changing an otherwise dull and one dimensional variety, Durif, into an exciting explosion of creative options from modern, juicy chilled red to co-fermenting it with Viognier to produce a Rhone style blend that will have you trying to buy shares in the winery. Aside from Durif, Rowly has created a streamlined approach to the winery, working with Rutherglen fruit but moving away from century old wine making and producing wines that will drive Rutherglen into the thoughts of twenty-somethings rather than their grandparents. Scion is a beautiful mixture of classic Australian varieties like Shiraz, Durif, Muscat and Viognier that are home in the historically important region of Rutherglen, yet made with the flair of someone who wants to take their own path. Scion Wines also sell their own delicious honey made from beehives located at the winery and have a focus on sustainability throughout the winery.

Pairing guide
Straight out of Rutherglen comes this beautifully delicate Provence-inspired pink wine, which is perfect for sipping on a sunny day alongside some lovingly-prepared homemade food. It’s a great choice for serving with dinner party favourites like salmon en croute, and will also work very nicely with seared tuna steaks, spiced scallops and prawn skewers cooked over coals. Charcuterie, fresh tomato salads, spinach and feta combos and pasta salads are also highly recommended with this one.

Wine region
Rutherglen, Australia
Rutherglen is located in the North East of Victoria, a region steeped in history and sticky fortifieds! It begins in the early 19th century, a period hallmarked by the gold rush and the nefarious Ned Kelly! It takes a special personality to pioneer a vineyard during this time. Lindsay Brown was one of the first vignerons to do it, planting vines at the Gooramadda Run site around 1851. He’s also responsible for one of the most enduring quotes of the time, saying, ‘dig gentleman dig, but no deeper than six inches, for there is more gold to be won from the top six inches than from all of the depths below.' And with vision, more and more vineyards sprouted throughout Rutherglen; it’s hard to believe only 30 years later, Rutherglen would be considered on the international stage for its luscious Tokay and heart table reds. Many wineries established at this time are still flourishing today, including and not limited to Gehrigs (1859), Chambers Rosewood (1859), Morris (1859), Campbells (1870), Stanton & Killeen (1875). Today the region is known for deep table reds made of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Durif, as well as fortified like Muscat and Tokay.
