Details
Monastrell is the Spanish synonym for Mourvèdre or Mataro and in this instance the Russell & Suitor team have made a spicy, Spanish edition that will have you thinking of cooking up some Chorizo. This full-bodied variety is displaying plenty of grunt, highlighted by dried fruit, bunches of sun-dried herbs and grippy tannin.

Alex Russell is an entrepreneurial winemaker who began his winemaking journey by crafting wines from Mildura and the Riverland, using a range of so-called 'alternative' grape varieties (mostly Mediterranean influenced) to create modern and approachable wines. Since then he has expanded south, to Tasmania, where he creates more classically styled wines from Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay. From Merlot to Montepulciano, the breadth is quite astounding! Alejandro is his range of Iberian and Mediterranean varieties, perfectly suited to the warm inland Aussie climate. This is modern winemaking at its best, and the attention to detail shows through in the suite of precise and detailed wines. Lots to love here, with fruit to the fore and a real eye for purity.

Pairing guide
Big, bold and bursting with flavour, this Monastrell wine doesn’t pull any punches. As such, it calls out for pairing with hearty and meaty dishes - we especially enjoyed it with a duck ragu, but it will pair just as well with any slow-cooked beef, lamb, duck or game stew, casserole or braise. Homemade burgers, roast eggplant and zucchini, autumnal vegetables like sweet potato with smoked paprika or portobello mushrooms with blue cheese will also be excellent. Delicious!

Riverland, Australia
Located in the heart of South Australia, the Riverland wine region is a tropical paradise for wine lovers. The region was formerly known for its traditional wines, particularly Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Grenache as well as its abundance of sunshine and beautiful scenery. In the last few years it's added a raft of Mediterranean varieties to its charm - think Fiano and Nero d'Avola. The warm climate and fertile soils of the Riverland make it a perfect place for grape growing, and the wines produced there are bursting with flavour.
