Details
This is a classic, dry expression of Pinot Gris (in a region that often makes sweet wines), with plenty of character. It leads with a nose of hazelnuts, with some mango and lemon. The wine is rich and creamy, but stays dry with good acidity and freshness. It's very food friendly, and can handle exotic foods and plenty of spice.

The Schmitt estate is one of family, quality vineyards and a refined approach to winemaking. The family has been making wine from its vineyards in the Alsatian subregion of Bergbieten since the early 17th century, and former winemaker Roland Schmitt began working them when he was fourteen years old. He took over the estate from his parents in his early twenties with his young wife Anne-Marie. Together they replanted many of the vineyards and steadily began making a name for themselves locally and all over Europe as producers of excellent organic wine. Now their sons Bruno and Julien manage the domaine, maintaining (and in some ways improving) their father's legacy. Their village is located about 25 kilometres east of Strasbourg. Although not as picturesque as the quaint villages further south, Bergbieten produces some of the most wonderful wines in all of Alsace. The uncompromising approach to organic viticulture here amplifies the minerality in the wines - all the wines are built around fresh acidity and a tanginess on the finish that leaves you wanting more. Excellent all round.

Pairing guide
Domaine Roland Schmitt has pulled it out of the bag once more with this characterful Pinot Gris, perfectly expressing all that amazing terroir and the finest features of this variety. It’s a top-notch salad-pairing wine, and will work especially well with seafood salads of prawns or grilled squid. Vegetable risottos, simple pasta preparations, grilled chicken breast or whole roast poultry will be delicious, as will seafood stews, barbecued oily fish, and plenty of spicy southeast Asian dishes too.

Wine region
Alsace, France
The Alsace wine region is located in northeast France and is known for producing high-quality white wines from aromatic grape varieties (also known as the 'noble' varieties). The region has a cool climate, which allows the grapes to retain their acidity and produce bright, fresh flavours and aromas. Alsace is divided into four main wine-producing areas and is known for its "terroir-driven" wines, which means that the character of the wine is strongly influenced by the specific vineyard where the grapes are grown. The region also produces small quantities of red and rosé wines and sparkling wines made using the traditional Champagne method. The four noble white varieties are; Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat.
