Details
This Pinot Blanc (a grape that is a bit of an Alsatian specialty) has a rich, floral nose, balanced by crisp, bright acidity. It walks a tightrope of freshness, with defined flavours of yellow apple and pear, backed with nuances of crushed stones. Very versatile and energetic, it's a lovely wine.

The Schmitt estate is one of family, quality vineyards and a refined approach to winemaking. The family has been making wine from its vineyards in the Alsatian subregion of Bergbieten since the early 17th century, and former winemaker Roland Schmitt began working them when he was fourteen years old. He took over the estate from his parents in his early twenties with his young wife Anne-Marie. Together they replanted many of the vineyards and steadily began making a name for themselves locally and all over Europe as producers of excellent organic wine. Now their sons Bruno and Julien manage the domaine, maintaining (and in some ways improving) their father's legacy. Their village is located about 25 kilometres east of Strasbourg. Although not as picturesque as the quaint villages further south, Bergbieten produces some of the most wonderful wines in all of Alsace. The uncompromising approach to organic viticulture here amplifies the minerality in the wines - all the wines are built around fresh acidity and a tanginess on the finish that leaves you wanting more. Excellent all round.

Pairing guide
We’re more than a little in love with this Pinot Blanc from Domaine Roland Schmitt, which offers heaps of freshness and vitality alongside amazing food-friendliness. It’s a great pairing for Italian pesto dishes - especially combinations of white fish or shellfish with green pesto - and will work very well with roast chicken dishes, turkey schnitzel, and pasta with ham and creamy sauces. Anything with mozzarella, ricotta or other fresh cheeses will also be magnificent here!

Wine region
Alsace, France
The Alsace wine region is located in northeast France and is known for producing high-quality white wines from aromatic grape varieties (also known as the 'noble' varieties). The region has a cool climate, which allows the grapes to retain their acidity and produce bright, fresh flavours and aromas. Alsace is divided into four main wine-producing areas and is known for its "terroir-driven" wines, which means that the character of the wine is strongly influenced by the specific vineyard where the grapes are grown. The region also produces small quantities of red and rosé wines and sparkling wines made using the traditional Champagne method. The four noble white varieties are; Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat.
