Details
We don't see much Tempranillo from Western Australia, but there is plenty planted there! Some people blend it with Shiraz, in a similar vein to a Shiraz/Cabernet blend. This wine does have some similarities with Cabernet, with a touch of grassy, bay leaf sitting alongside dark cherry and dried red plum. It's spicy, floral, smooth and captivating. Lots to enjoy!

Risky Business is a collaboration between grape grower and viticulturist Rob Quenby and vintner John Waldron. Both with significant experience in the wine scene, they came together in 2013 to produce small batches of fine and distinctive wines from varied areas across Australia. The Western Australian grapes come from Rob’s vineyards, managed by his own viticultural company, whilst they also look to Victoria's King Valley for some fruit. They're not looking to reinvent the wheel, rather to source great fruit from established vineyards and fashion stylish and traditional wines that have a modern edge. They seek fullness of flavour and depth, with a mixture of varieties at play. This is something they're committed to attaining, and the resultant wines certainly show better for it. Whether it be their classic re-interpretation of the Aussie Cabernet Shiraz blend, or their juicy and vital Riesling, their selection of wines is a lovely introduction into the modern Australian wine scene. You don't see a lot of Tempranillo from Western Australia, but there is plenty planted there! Some people blend it with Shiraz, in a similar vein to a Shiraz/Cabernet blend. This wine does have some similarities with Cabernet in fact, with a touch of grassy/bay leaf flavour sitting alongside dark cherry and dried red plum. It's spicy, floral, bold and very captivating. Lots to enjoy here, but make sure you give it some time and air to really strut its stuff.

Pairing guide
Tempranillo wines, such as this fully-flavoured number from Risky Business, have a long history of being paired with the kind of hearty, rustic dishes that we really look forward to at the end of a long day at work. Spanish favourites like chorizo in red wine, meaty paella, braised pork and beef, and bean stews all work wonders with this wine, as do all your Mexican and Tex-Mex favourites like burritos, chili con carne, and spicy fajitas. Almost any meat-based or bean-based tapas dish will work well, and thick, glossy ragus will also be a top pairing here.

Frankland River, Australia
Frankland River is one of five sub-regions in Great Southern, Western Australia. The Great Southern as the name suggests is extremely large, spread out over 100 km north to south and 150 km east to west. Frankland River is located in the north-west part of Great Southern and is known for high quality Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling as well as recent movement towards Grenache, Tempranillo and other Mediterranean varieties. The region is relatively recent with plantings dating back to 1967 and by the 1980s wineries like Alkoomi and Frankland Estate were well established.
