Details
Malbec hasn't yet made the splash in Australia that it perhaps deserves - it's a well-loved grape that isn't often bottled on its own. This wine makes a clear case for that to change; ripe dark berries, black plums and vanilla aromas combine for a rich and powerful wine. There’s a savoury, smoky aroma too, and it finishes grippy and chewy. Phwoar!
Risky Business is a collaboration between grape grower and viticulturist Rob Quenby and vintner John Waldron. Both with significant experience in the wine scene, they came together in 2013 to produce small batches of fine and distinctive wines from varied areas across Australia. The Western Australian grapes come from Rob’s vineyards, managed by his own viticultural company, whilst they also look to Victoria's King Valley for some fruit. They're not looking to reinvent the wheel, rather to source great fruit from established vineyards and fashion stylish and traditional wines that have a modern edge. They seek fullness of flavour and depth, with a mixture of varieties at play. This is something they're committed to attaining, and the resultant wines certainly show better for it. Whether it be their classic re-interpretation of the Aussie Cabernet Shiraz blend, or their juicy and vital Riesling, their selection of wines is a lovely introduction into the modern Australian wine scene. This bottle makes a clear case for that to change - dark berries, black plums and mild florals all combine for a powerful wine. Quite earthen as well, with a discreet touch of oak. All class.

Pairing guide
Despite the name of the winery, there’s something truly comforting about this deeply flavourful Malbec; the kind of wine that just assures you with every sip that you’re in very safe hands. With all that gorgeous fruit flavour and punchy tannin, you’ll want to pair this wine with the richness of a good pork loin dish, or something with a strong, sticky glaze like banh mi or duck breast in plum sauce. It’s also fantastic with a smoky baba ganoush, pulled jackfruit, or bean burger, and will work well with French farmhouse classics like coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon.
