Details
This isn't your NZ Savvy B, this is a complex and interesting Sauvignon Blanc, made with care and attention to detail. With a bouquet more commonly found in Chardonnay, this wine shows flinty and buttery notes, with celery leaf and dried herbs lingering in the background. The palate opens up with some buttery popcorn and a touch of pineapple, and lemon, with the end result being a well-made and delicious wine.

For those who have spent a full weekend sitting on the couch with a few tinnies watching cars fly up and down hills with names like Skaife, Brock and Lowndes dominating Bathurst, it may be a surprise to you that on this same hallowed turf sit some incredibly good vines that produce equally incredible wine. Enter the Renzaglia family into the frame, where for years they have been plugging away quietly to produce some of the finest Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon around. Mark and Sandy Renzaglia had their first start in the world of wine when, in 1982, Mark’s parents planted vines in Illinois, USA, which at the time was a dry zone, so you weren’t permitted to make alcohol. Luckily, Sandy, being an Aussie, and Mark, who set up in Australia, planted their first vines in 1997 outside Bathurst. Today, their son, Sam, has brought in some flair with the Wambuul Valley range alongside the playful Di Renzo series, which both sit alongside the iconic ‘Bella Luna’ series. The Renzaglia family also pays respects to traditional landowners and the land itself through their vineyard management and bottle messaging.

Pairing guide
This Sauvignon Blanc likes to keep you on your toes, and the food pairings are just as interesting as the wine itself. The flinty, buttery character and dried herb notes make it a wonderful match for dishes with a little richness and texture, so a pan-seared barramundi with a beurre blanc, a creamy chicken and leek pie or a silky prawn and corn chowder are all excellent starting points. That touch of pineapple and lemon on the palate also adds a lovely brightness to the table, making it a great companion for a Thai-inspired chicken salad, some crispy soft-shell crab, or a fresh prawn and mango salad. For something more relaxed, a good triple-cream brie, some water crackers, and a little honeycomb is a beautifully simple pairing that lets the wine's complexity do all the talking. A smoked chicken and avocado tart, grilled scallops with a herb butter or a zucchini and ricotta frittata are also very much worth exploring alongside this one.
