Details
Like Halley's Comet, Bryan Martin's Zinfandel/Primitivo/Pribidrag only comes around every few years, with this 2024 having no follow-up and last made in the early teens. That's a shame because it's a pretty cool wine, with this medium to full bodied black fruited chunkiness and lots of cherry spice, the rum and raisin character a contrast to some zippy freshness. Whatever you call it, this is fun wine!
Although small, Ravensworth is already on the verge of becoming an iconic Australian winery. This is quite remarkable, given the lack of pretension of the owner and winemaker Bryan Martin. For over 15 years, Bryan has built a formidable reputation as the head winemaker at legendary Clonakilla in Canberra; it was here that he crafted some of this country's greatest cool-climate Syrahs whilst simultaneously setting up his own project. In 2020, Ravensworth completed its winery and cellar, which is filled with impressive structures of large-format oak, ceramic eggs, Italian Amphorae, and custom concrete monoliths—all unique vessels for wines to harmonise until they are ready for release. The Ravensworth range is now jam-packed with unique NSW wines from Canberra and all over NSW. Additionally, Bryan is also seriously adept in the kitchen, with a legendary appreciation for nose-to-tail cooking (hence the beasts you might spot on the Ravensworth label).

Pairing guide
Whether you call it Primitivo or Zinfandel, this black-fruited, hearty red is really quite a character. You know what, though? It really needs some clever work in the pairing department to really shine. Our first stop is the BBQ, with grilled pork, ribs, wings, smoked beef and chargrilled capsicum as a great starting point. Stews, earthy root veggies and lots of mushrooms are the next choice, and all the hearty foods. Hard cheese is a no-brainer here too, especially aged examples that have plenty of flavour. Finally, this is actually a wonderful wine with chocolate, which is a rare thing in itself.
