Details
Dark, spicy and full of intrigue - this is Aglianico, an Italian variety originally from the central and southern part of the boot, but here grown in the Riverland in SA. This one is medium-bodied but has the classic Aglianico tannin and acidity levels. Earthy red fruits, sour cherry, plum and mulberry, with a backdrop of bitter chocolate and dried thyme. Delicious.
Origin: Either southern Italy or Greece – the experts haven’t decided yet! Mainly Grown In: Led by the huge plantings in Italy, but slowly popping up in California and the McLaren Vale. Key Facts: The name originates from the Italian ‘ellenico’ – translating to Hellenic, and a reference to the possibility of Greek heritage. It’s a bold, rugged grape, producing wines that have plenty of fruit power, but also lots of juicy acidity and grippy tannin. Full throttle stuff. Expect flavours like mulberry, plum, bitter chocolate and a real sense of darkness and power. It can come across all pretty as well, with some delicate aromas of violet and rose, but this is just a trick – once you drink it, you’re under its spell, and the roaring acidity and tannins kick in. Strap in for the ride. Fun Fact: Did you know that some grape researchers think that Aglianico may have the longest consumer history of all wine varieties, since its roots can be traced to ancient Greece?

Riverland, Australia
Located in the heart of South Australia, the Riverland wine region is a tropical paradise for wine lovers. The region was formerly known for its traditional wines, particularly Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Grenache as well as its abundance of sunshine and beautiful scenery. In the last few years it's added a raft of Mediterranean varieties to its charm - think Fiano and Nero d'Avola. The warm climate and fertile soils of the Riverland make it a perfect place for grape growing, and the wines produced there are bursting with flavour.
