Details
Mill Hill is one of the highest vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula at Arthurs Seat. That altitude, and Sam Coverdale's minimalistic winemaking all combine here to deliver what is a magical Chardonnay with so much going on. It's instantly mouthfilling and full-flavoured with this brioche and custard aromas and a palate of generous white peach and nutty barrel characters.

Sam Coverdale's time in the wine industry started early. At just 18, he was a cellar hand working vintage at Tyrrell's in the Hunter Valley, where he quickly realised that this wine caper seemed okay. From here, he ended up working all over the globe, including extended stints in Burgundy and in Canberra, eventually settling back on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula to make his Polperro wines. Proudly made in a lo-fi, low-touch method, the Polperro releases are a textural joy ride into Mornington flavour, showcasing the influences of different sites on the Peninsula. Sam turns out decadent Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in particular, all crafted at his converted apple shed winery (that now also has a famed restaurant and yoga retreat).

Pairing guide
An absolute joy to drink and pair with food, this stunning Chardonnay from Polperro couldn’t be more to our liking. It’s the kind of wine that works best when matched with dishes that don’t shy away from the more opulent end of the home cook’s repertoire - we’re talking crab and chilli linguine, buttered lobster tails, stuffed roast chicken with a white wine gravy and all the vegetables you fancy. It’s also excellent with Chinese cuisine like prawn kung pao, Manchurian cauliflower and chow mein, and will pair nicely with creamier curries made with coconut milk or ground almonds and cashews.

Wine region
Mornington Peninsula, Australia
Just an hour's drive south of Melbourne is the Pinot Paradise, also known as Mornington Peninsula. The signature variety of the region is, without a doubt, Pinot Noir, accounting for over half of the region’s vines, followed by Chardonnay at 25% and Pinot Gris at 20%. Pinot Noir from this region is typically characterised by its refreshing acidity and purity. The deep colour may lead you to think these wines are potent, but in reality, the wines are elegant, pretty and medium-bodied at best. Surrounded by Bass Strait, Port Phillip Bay and Western Port Bay in Victoria, Mornington Peninsula’s climate is uniquely maritime cool and breezy. In fact, no vineyard is further than 7km from the ocean! Some of the most notable producers in the Mornington Peninsula include Kooyong, Ten Minutes by Tractor, Stonier Wines and boutique wineries such as Montalto, Ocean Eight, and Quealy Wines.
