Details
Medium-bodied, spicy and full of charm, this is a really serious Pinot Noir. It's got plenty of fruit, although the overall feeling is of earthiness and savour. The tannins are very soft, and so the texture is really wonderful.
The main characters are of blueberry, red currant and ripe red plums. There's a gentle floral element that really perfumes the wine, and then, with a bit of air, you begin to smell some of those spicy characters.
The wine has spent some time in older oak barrels, and you get faint whiffs of cinnamon and ginger from this.
Overall, a soft and yet complex example of Victorian Pinot Noir.
Phil and his wife Lyn live in a region called Glenburn, in the Yea Valley. This is really at the very northern end of the Yarra Valley, pushing up towards that famous Australian town, Bonnie Doon. Here they grow grapes and bake bread in a peaceful and environmentally respectful way, and have done for over 25 years. The minimise all outputs, so that their land can be as clean and peaceful as possible. This means using solar energy, diminishing their carbon footprint, recycling avidly and ensuring that they avoid chemical inputs into their vineyard. The vineyards are immaculate - tended by hand, with birds singing all around, it really is a magical place. The wines are reflections of this place - they evoke light, beauty and freshness.

Pairing guide
Most chefs, sommeliers and wine lovers alike will probably agree that when it comes to food pairing with red wine, there’s nothing quite like a Pinot Noir. This is the most flexible and versatile of the lighter-bodied reds, and it’s fair to say that it goes with pretty much anything you can throw at it. For best results, however, pair this unfined wine with rustic dishes of duck, lamb, or other game meat dishes. It will also pair nicely with seared tuna or roasted salmon, or vegetarian dishes packing a punch with beetroot and pumpkin.

Wine region

Yea Valley, Australia
The Yea Valley in cool climate Victoria, Australia, can be characterised by its diverse soils which range from volcanic basalt to sedimentary rock. This allows for a broad range of wine styles, but the cream of the crop is without a doubt Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The climate is advantageous too, the autumn mists that roll across over vineyards, creating a shroud before being dissolved by sunrise, this results in cool and slow ripening to the benefit to all varieties. The top sub-regions within Yea Valley include the Strath Creek, known for its rich, full-bodied red wines, and the Yea sub-region, which produces elegant and refined wines with good acidity and structure, followed by the sub-region of Nah – only kidding, but wouldn’t that be funny? Other notable varieties produced in the region include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Overall, Yea Valley is a small but flourishing wine growing region that is gaining recognition for its distinctive wines and unique terroir.
