Details
A really elegant, restrained nose with lime, guava, some mango and green apple also evident, but starts out fairly fresh and light initially. There's some grassiness and a herbal character, a bit like blackcurrant leaves. Letting the wine sit in the glass for a while brings out more blackcurrant leaf. The palate is tangy and tart with plenty of acidity. It really appeals on the flavour front, with white grapefruit/mandarin peel and more autumn grass. The chalky palate is impressive. Long finish, high acid, lots going on here. A really high-quality example of one of the world's most famous grapes.
It’s no secret that many of the world’s greatest wineries are very much family affairs, with mothers, fathers, kids, grandparents, cousins and even more distant relatives all mucking in with each stage of the winemaking process. It’s a business model that has been around since the dawn of civilisation, and family wineries do a great job of finding their style, niche, and whatever makes them unique in an often highly standardised market. Paul Cluver winery may take its name from the Cluver clan’s patriarch and chief winemaker, but make no mistake - this top South African operation is very much a family-run one, with Paul’s wife and children being involved from the growing to the harvest to the vinification and bottling. The Cluver family has been working in the beautiful wine region of Elgin since the late 19th century and has played a key part in shaping much of the identity of this part of the world. They’re dedicated to not only making beautiful, expressive, and identifiably South African wines on their de Rust estate, but also to preserving the unique biodiversity of their land, too. Together with the Cape Nature project, Paul Cluver and his brood have taken steps to reduce chemical intervention to the bare minimum and promote the sustainability of their estate. The result? Gorgeously flavourful wines, a healthy, thriving eco-system, and an estate which will serve the next generations of Cluver winemakers.

Elgin, South Africa
Elgin is a cool-climate wine region located in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The region is known for its high-altitude vineyards, rugged landscapes, and unique terroir. The cool and wet climate, combined with the region's shale and sandstone soils, produces wines with a distinctive minerality and crisp acidity. Elgin is particularly renowned for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which thrive in the cool and humid conditions. Other grape varieties grown in the region include Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Shiraz. In addition to the wine, the Elgin region is also a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and birdwatching.
