Details
The Clurichaun is known as a bad-tempered cousin of the Leprechaun, who resides in wine cellars around Ireland. If you are kind to the creature, he will take good care of your wines, but if not, he will drink you out of house and home. This moody, dark and seriously full-bodied red is a complex beast too, with layers of dark fruit, olives, blackberries, blueberries and this limitless black fruit feel.

Paisley Wines is the work of Derek 'DJ Derek' Fitzgerald, his wife Kirsten, based out of their own vineyard at Angaston in the Eden Valley. Derek has been around the vats for many years now, working for other Barossa wineries, and this is the first time that he and Kirsten have gone out on their own. There is such an honesty in these wines that really reflects them as people too - wines of big flavours, lots of heart and yet somehow very well priced. Indeed, Derek is anything but a shy bloke, and one of the ranges in this lineup is DJ Deadly, a nod to his old 90s DJ name. A big part of the story here is the 15-acre vineyard planted to Shiraz, Fiano and Mataro, which is complemented by grapes from prime vineyards across the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Oh, and the name? Kirsten’s great-great-grandfather came to Adelaide from Paisley, a town in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. You can even spot some Paisley patterns on some of the labels!

Pairing guide
When asked what to pair with this beast, Derek and Kirsten suggest this rich wine would be an excellent pairing with roasted meats, cured meats and cheeses. We went a bit more granular than that and tried this red out with a range of grilled things to work out that we liked meat and grilled vegetables with a richer edge, whether that comes from gravy, sauce, or even a fruit contrast seen in tagines.
