Details
A dark and serious wine, this is made from a blend comprising mostly of Tannat, a relatively rare south-western French grape, one that is not commonly planted in Australia. It's dark fruited yet savoury wine, with earth, oak and tannin all combining for a rich mouthful of power and presence. Impressive.
Origin : South-western France Mainly Grown In : Near the France/Spain border, but also in Uruguay! Small plantings in Brazil, California and Australia. Key Facts : A native of France, Tannat has become the unlikely icon of the Uruguayan viticultural scene, and as a result, has put it on the winemaking map. On the nose, Tannat shows plenty of black fruit, herbs and wet stones. Structurally, it can range from highly tannic to softer and more rounded, depending on the vineyard site. It typically displays blackberry, dark plum, smoke and dried spices, but the berry quality can be fruitier and softer when it’s from Uruguay! Fun Fact: Tannat in Uruguay, where it is remarkably popular, is referred to locally as Harriague, in honour of Pascal Harriague who first introduced the wine from France.

Pairing guide
Big, bold, and beautifully rich, Tannat is a fantastically food-friendly wine which can stand up to some seriously hefty flavours on your palate. This stunner from Old Jarvie is going to love being paired with strong cheeses like Roquefort, and will be delicious served alongside bistro classics like cassoulet, confit duck, boeuf bourguignon, and lamb shank. Sausages and homemade burgers will also be a winner here, as will be the deeply savoury delight of grilled eggplant in a glossy tomato sauce.
