Details
Gavi di Gavi is the region that produces Cortese in Piedmont. Although the region is better known for red wines, this versatile grape variety sneaks under the radar which is just fine for us. The aroma keeps its cards close to its chest with a touch of pear and saline mineral notes. The palate is restrained with similar notes but nice fleshy texture and we would recommend not drinking this straight out of the fridge.
Since 1946, Nicola Bergaglio was one of the first known wineries in the Gavi (southeast of Piedmont) region to grow and produce their own wines when others just were selling grapes! Today, Gianluigi and Diego Bergaglio, the father-son duo behind the winery, proudly continue the family tradition of making exceptional Cortese. Cortese is very much its own variety, intensely perfumed, with verdant herbal qualities and citrus, but with an aging capacity comparable to Chardonnay. Nicola Bergaglio wines are known for their elegance, harmonious play of fruit, and higher acidity, thanks to the constant shift in day and night temperatures due to the perpetual breeze generated by the Ligurian Sea or the Alps. The Bergaglios organically farm their vineyards, which is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and producing smart wines that tell the story of the Gavi region. Nicola Bergaglio wines are highly sought after by wine enthusiasts the world over. Their single vineyard Minaia is considered one of the best in the region! Flavoursome, refreshing, and sophisticated. You need to try this!

Pairing guide
Gavi di Gavi is right up there with our favourite Italian wine styles, and this bottle from the ever-impressive Nicola Bergaglio is a stunning example of its various charms. We love this wine with grilled fish spritzed with lemon, ceviche, sushi, seafood pasta or risotto dishes, and any squid or octopus salad, soup, or homemade seafood chowder. Goat’s cheese dishes, chicken salads, turkey or pork cooked in white wine and simple spaghetti or tagliatelle dishes will also work like a dream with this wine!

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy
The Piedmont wine region in Italy is a magical place known for producing world-class wines. The region is bordered by the Alps to the north and the Apennine Mountains to the south, and it is characterized by rolling hills and a diverse landscape. The climate in Piedmont is generally cool and wet, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. This climate is well-suited to grape growing offering slow and steady ripening conditions which lead to high-quality and expressive wines. Piedmont is most praised for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, which are made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barbera and Dolcetto are other celebrated reds of the region, and as for its white wines, Arneis, Moscato d'Asti and the rare Nascetta. Piedmont is also famous for its flavorful truffles, often used in local dishes, and pair beautiful with its regional wines.
