Details
This is a blockbuster Merlot with a nice balance of oak and fruit when you are looking for something with plenty of flavour. There is a healthy dose of vanilla and liquorice with a backdrop of cherries and plush plums.

Nannup Ridge is located in the picturesque region of Blackwood Valley in the South-West of Western Australia, where the gum trees are grand lifeforms that reach for the moon, and almost touch. Nannup Ridge is named after the main town in this region, where you will find a healthy mix of cafes and pubs and enough knick-knack shops to keep any seasoned grey nomad happy. The winery is run by the Fitzgerald family, who initially used the vineyards to supply larger wineries like Houghton's before the tap ran dry. Today, the winery focuses on turning their grapes into wine rather than letting someone else do so, with the help of acclaimed winemaker Bruce Dukes. They have the standard mix of varieties found in this part of the world, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and of course Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc making up the classical mix. The wines are well made and perfect for those who love perusing local craft shops or having a pint in a quaint country pub.

Pairing guide
Beautifully plush and packed with irresistible hedgerow flavours, this Merlot is a fantastic red wine with amazing food-friendly features. We loved it with juicy cuts of lamb and a rich onion gravy, but it’s equally delicious with slow-cooked duck legs or pan-roasted breast, garlic vegetables or a classic wine-based casserole or braise. Red cabbage, cavolo nero and mushrooms are excellent vegetarian options, and it’s also brilliant with steak and chips, homemade burgers and meatballs in tomato sauce.

Wine region
Blackwood Valley, Australia
Blackwood Valley is a stunning part of WA where you will find massive forests of red gum trees (Marri, Blackbutt and Jarrah) which are sought after all over Australia. The region is home to quaint towns like Nannup, Bridgetown and Balingup where you can climb 100m trees with very little OH&S standards, catch a beer (midi) in a historic pub where you may find a skimpie or two and enjoy a few glasses of local wines. The wine region is growing with several wineries now plying their trade and focusing on varieties like Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Chardonnay.
