Details
Central Otago is Pinot Noir country, so a Gamay this good is a lovely surprise. Grown organically at Muirkirk Vineyard in Bannockburn, it's bursting with red and purple berries with a herby spice running through it. Soft tannins, juicy and light on its feet. Minimal sulphur, unfined and unfiltered, so keep it cool and serve it slightly chilled.
The bucolic region of Central Otago in New Zealand saw Duncan Forsyth and John Buchanan establish Mount Edward in 1997. In a region dominated by mountains, untouched ancient soils, cool air and endless days of sunshine, the resulting wines are world-class. Here, the wines are as good as the views and the snowboarding. Duncan Forsyth and Anna Riederer create wines that have been certified organic, but they also have biodynamic leanings. They hand-harvest, use wild-yeast ferments, and rarely filter their wines. Crafting everything from Grüner Veltliner to Vermouth, the team hold a special place in their hearts for Riesling and Pinot Noir.

Pairing guide
The pairing flows pretty easily here. Pull the cork on a warm evening and keep the food simple. Roast chicken with plenty of herbs, or indeed duck or pork for a start, with mushroom and thyme tart, or a plate of charcuterie with cornichons. It's light enough not to bully delicate flavours, and the juicy berry fruit and soft tannins mean it even works with grilled salmon. Half an hour in the fridge first will do wonders, but don't chill it too much or that slightly herbal streak can make this proper tangy.

Wine region

Central Otago, New Zealand
New Zealand's Central Otago region is a cool climate haven on the country's South Island which, over the years has become something of a Mecca for one of the most complex, beguiling red grapes in the world: Pinot Noir. Home to some of the most southerly vineyards in the world, Central Otago's wines have gained cult status of late, often being compared as one of (if not) the best producers of Pinot Noir outside of its spiritual home of Burgundy in France. The region, with its dramatic scenery, is complete with vineyards planted on mountain slopes in some of the most stunning wine-growing areas in the wine world. But it's not just Pinot Noir that gets all of the attention. High-quality Riesling is also made in Central Otago by a handful of the region's family-owned, small, boutique producers.
