Details
This is proper old school rich Chardonnay with plenty of flavour. It smells warm and inviting, almost like buttered toast, toasted hazelnut, and ripe stonefruit with a seam of lovely vanilla and oatmeal characters. It feels good too - smooth and rich, with a big mouthful of flavour. Medium to full bodied, but not too heavy, Goldilocks style, with a nice zip to the finish. It’s well-balanced and all round good drinking.

Like so many of us stuck in the city, Melbourne stockbroker John Barry dreamed of somewhere else. Somewhere greener. Way back before tree-changing was a thing, John's journey landed him in the Pyrenees, just outside the historic Gold Rush town of Avoca, where he purchased a 400-acre property off Moates Lane and planted the first vines back in 1970. Over the following decades, the vineyard grew bigger, more than 1000 olive trees joined the vines, and second-generation Barry family member Matthew Barry took over. Matthew continued the environmental ethos and practice instigated by his dad, converting the vineyard to certified organic production, and added a group of ecolodges in 2009, which the family think are perfect for 'just hang out, unwind and bask in the peaceful and largely untouched Pyrenees'. Meanwhile, the full-flavoured Mount Avoca wines are just as welcome, led by a selection of typically evocative Chardonnay, Viognier, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pairing guide
Richer styled Chardonnay like this feels like a forgotten species in the modern era and we really miss the flavour volume. This peach Chardonnay can really cope with big flavours too - crack out your creamiest pastas, or anything with lots of cheesy richness, and the weight and viscosity of this wine will have you covered. We like it with roast chicken, carbonara and dishes that lean into egg richness like omelettes. It's really worth trying how this wine interacts with different dishes as it warms up too - it just gets more broad and rich as it sits in your wine glass.

Wine region
Pyrenees, Australia
The Pyrenees wine region is located in the state of Victoria in Australia. It is known for producing a range of high-quality red and white wines, particularly Shiraz and Chardonnay. The region is named after the Pyrenees mountain range, which forms its eastern boundary. The wine-growing area extends from the town of Avoca in the north to Moonambel in the south and is situated at an altitude of between 200 and 600 meters above sea level. The region's cool climate and diverse soil types are well-suited to grape growing and contribute to the unique character of the wines produced here. Cool fact: the region is home to the "Big Red," a life-sized sculpture of a red grape that serves as a popular photo spot for visitors to the area, so if you find yourself in the area, be sure to check it out!
