Details
Dolcetto makes for such a super drinkable and refreshing red wine that it always seems strange that it isn't more popular, especially when the winemaker is none other than Massolino. Red and blue fruit flavours is what this Italian red is all about, with this lovely spicy bitter twist to what is otherwise a bright and fruit forward wine but with a lovely refreshing firm edge to it.
The Massolino family's history as winegrowers stretches back more than a century. The village of Serralunga d'Alba, in Italy's beautiful Langhe hills, has been home to this venerable Italian producer since the late 19th century. From founder Giovanni Massolino to the present day, this is a proud family estate with a heritage richly intertwined with that of the whole region of 'Barolo'. Importantly, the Massolinos own some of the most prized patches of vines in all of Italy, including the famous Margheria, Parafada, and Vigna Rionda vineyards, as well as their long history of excellence. Classic styles are what Massolino are famous for, which translates into the wines being wonderful reds and whites with a pure expression, highlighted by everything from crisp and juicy Moscato and vibrant Dolcetto, right through to absolutely profound Nebbiolo.

Pairing guide
Famously, Dolcetto is the ultimate table wine. It's meant to be enjoyed relatively young when you can enjoy the array of fresh fruits, and the fruity but savoury style makes it such a great drinker, especially with some of the classic dishes of the Langhe region. Cured meast and grilled vegetables like zucchini, capsicum or eggplant are the go-to for a start, as is anything using those same ingredients in a pizza (or indeed a pasta). The Massolino family recommends having this wine 'at the beginning of a meal, served with starters (other than fish) and sliced meats' which we definitely aren't going to argue with.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy
The Piedmont wine region in Italy is a magical place known for producing world-class wines. The region is bordered by the Alps to the north and the Apennine Mountains to the south, and it is characterized by rolling hills and a diverse landscape. The climate in Piedmont is generally cool and wet, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. This climate is well-suited to grape growing offering slow and steady ripening conditions which lead to high-quality and expressive wines. Piedmont is most praised for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, which are made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barbera and Dolcetto are other celebrated reds of the region, and as for its white wines, Arneis, Moscato d'Asti and the rare Nascetta. Piedmont is also famous for its flavorful truffles, often used in local dishes, and pair beautiful with its regional wines.
